The BLACK LAND e.V. initiative is back at the start of fall and would like to draw your attention to upcoming events and activities by its members. We look forward to the encounters and discussions!

On October 1, 2025, Yara Mekawei (sound artist) will give a live performance entitled “The Shrine” at the “Ritual” festival in Cologne. Further information can be found here.

Elena Sinanina (curator and artistic director) will present part of her curatorial research on the movements of ancient Egyptian artifacts belonging to Pharaoh Hatshepsut between Deir El-Bahari, Egypt, and museums in Berlin and New York at the AICAD Association's “Engaging Values” conference at the Pratt Institute in New York on November 13, 2025. Further information on the presentation and the conference can be found on the Pratt Institute's website.

As part of the “Culturescapes Performance Day” at the Museum Tinguely in Basel, Yara Mekawei will present the performance “El-Qibla” on November 29, 2025. Further information can be found on the museum's website.

Kerylos Aziz (Egyptologist) has been working as a licensed guide in Egypt since 2000, leading interested visitors through the country's important archaeological sites, places, and museums, such as Giza, Saqqara, Dahshur, Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel, and others. Kerylos researches alternative perspectives on ancient Egyptian topics and history and has been part of the “BLACK LAND” team since 2021. If you have any questions about Ancient Egypt beyond the institutionalized paths, Kerylos is happy to help and can be contacted here.

The BLACK LAND e.V. initiative cordially invites you to attend a few upcoming events this summer!

On July 3, 2025, Elena Sinanina (curator and artistic director) will present past "BLACK LAND"-projects and current researches at the Kunstbau of Lenbachhaus in Munich and discuss working methods with Lilli Roser (head of communications, ZKM Karlsruhe) and Andrea Lesjak (artist) under the title “Museums as Contact Zones.” Admission is free; further information can be found here.

From July 4 to July 6, 2025, the conference and networking meeting “Dekolonisierung trotz alledem!" ("Decolonization despite everything!”) will take place in Berlin, organized by Decolonize Berlin. The founding members Elena Sinanina and Lutz Knospe will participate in this meeting and present their work. Registration and further information can be found on the Decolonize Berlin website.

At the beginning of this year, our team began extensive research and investigation into the archaeological sites in Deir El-Bahari (Luxor), Egypt, and artifacts of the pharaoh Hatshepsut. This led Yara Mekawei and Elena Sinanina, among others, to the Metropolitan Museum in New York in January, supported by the Goethe-Institut. The results of the research will be presented in individual publications and events, launching later this year with a critical historical contextualization of Deir El-Bahari by Kerylos Aziz, Egyptologist.

We look forward to the upcoming encounters and wish you a wonderful and sunny summer!
